Hudson’s Bay (and its stores) today

On June 1, 2025, all Hudson’s Bay stores were closed down for good. Nearly every location remains empty today.

In October 2025, a resurrected Zellers (now owned by Benitah family, which controls a number of retailers including International Clothiers and Fairweather) opened its first store in Edmonton’s Londonderry Mall. The store took up one floor of a former Hudson’s Bay store.

Meanwhile, discount retailer Les Ailes de la Mode (also owned by the Benitahs) wanted to move into the former Hudson’s Bay location at Yorkdale in North York. The mall’s owner, Oxford Properties, fought against the lease transfer and won in 2026. It claimed that Les Ailes was “not a financially healthy retailer” and the stores “look and feel temporary and down-market.” Yorkdale is home to a number of luxury retailers including Holt Renfrew, Cartier, Loro Piana, Tiffany, and Moncler. Old Navy closed its Yorkdale store in 2025.

Parts of the Hudson’s Bay store in downtown Toronto were re-opened in late 2025 to allow pedestrians to access the Eaton Centre aboveground in time for the holiday shopping season. There are now some ads on the outside of the store. Guess Cadillac Fairview needs to pay the bills to keep the lights on and the escalators running.

The signage at the downtown store was removed in 2026, revealing remnants of the old Simpsons signage in some areas. Those signs and other Hudson’s Bay memorabilia continue to be auctioned off by Toronto-based Heffel.

Meanwhile, the Hudson’s Bay brand lives on at Canadian Tire. The first products (including point blankets) launched in late 2025 followed by another round in May 2026. Expect more products to become available in the years ahead.
